What is a wet belt?

Unlike a conventional dry timing belt, a wet belt runs inside the engine in oil rather than in open air. The design was intended to reduce friction and allow longer service intervals. In practice, these belts proved susceptible to premature degradation – particularly when oil changes were delayed or the wrong oil specification was used. Ford subsequently issued revised guidance recommending significantly shorter replacement intervals than the original schedule for a number of affected engines.
